After two previous tender submissions over several years, MCA Engineering secured the design and construction contract to refurbish Xstrata’s Copper Concentrator Crude Ore Bin at Mount Isa, QLD. The project restored the bin to its original 60,000 tonne live ore design capacity, including full replacement and refurbishment of all Bin 36 Rock Boxes and Syntechton Feeders.
Xstrata’s Crude Ore Bin had degraded below its original design capacity, requiring a full refurbishment to restore 60,000 tonnes of live ore capacity. The scope demanded complete replacement and refurbishment of all Bin 36 Rock Boxes and Syntechton Feeders, a complex design and construction challenge MCA had pursued across two earlier tender submissions before winning the contract.
MCA Engineering delivered the design and construction contract as head contractor, managing the full replacement and refurbishment of the Rock Boxes and Syntechton Feeders alongside the broader bin restoration works. The nine-month programme was executed with a strong safety focus, reflecting MCA’s capability to lead complex, high-value refurbishment projects for major mining operators.
MCA completed the Crude Ore Bin refurbishment in nine months with no Lost Time Injuries recorded, restoring the bin to its full 60,000 tonne design capacity. The project’s success was recognised with the 2014 QLD Steel Institute Excellence Award for Engineering Projects, cementing it as a major milestone for MCA Engineering.
