Ground Support

Summary

MCA Engineering was mobilised by Newcrest in 2017 to provide project supervision, personnel and specialist equipment for the re-start of underground operations at Cadia East Mine following a 3.7 magnitude seismic event. MCA took the lead contractor role in rectifying significant ground damage that had suspended all underground operations at the site.

The Challenge

A 3.7 magnitude seismic event caused significant ground damage at Cadia East, forcing the suspension of all underground operations. Newcrest needed to mobilise experienced ground support contractors quickly to assess and rectify the damage, restore safe underground access and get the operation back into production with minimal further delay.

Our Approach

MCA mobilised experienced project supervisors, personnel and specialist ground support equipment to site, working alongside several other underground contractors mobilised for the rehabilitation effort. MCA took the lead role in rectifying the damaged ground, applying its underground construction and ground support expertise to manage the complex, safety-critical rehabilitation works.

The Solution

MCA’s lead role in the ground support rehabilitation helped restore safe underground access at Cadia East, enabling Newcrest to recommence operations following the seismic event. The project demonstrated MCA’s ability to respond rapidly to critical, safety-sensitive underground incidents and deliver rehabilitation works at the pace major mining operators require.
